How we work

We take on full project scopes on large commercial sites and subdivisions. We’re built for sustained work alongside a general contractor or developer, not one-off day rates.

Most of what we do is on grade. Cutting lots into a mountainside is a different discipline from working a flat site — drainage, staging, benching and slope stability all have to be solved before a single pad is finished, and the retaining that holds it has to advance at the same rate as the cut.

Because we quarry our own rock and run our own crushing, material coming out of your cut can come back as base without leaving the property. That’s one contractor, one point of contact, from the first cut to the last lot.

Mass excavation & site balancing

Moving volume, and moving it once. Cut-to-fill balanced on site wherever the ground allows, so material isn’t hauled off one end of a project and imported back at the other.

On a development running across several phases, the balance is a schedule problem as much as an earthwork one — material from a later phase is often the fill an earlier one needs, and sequencing that correctly is where the savings actually are.

Over-lot & finish grading

Over-lot grading through to finish grade, taking a raw parcel to pads that are ready to build on. Tolerances tighten as you go, and the last pass is the one everything else sits on.

Wet and dry utilities go in alongside — trenching, bedding and backfill, using our own drain rock and base rather than waiting on a delivery.

Machine control keeps the finish honest. Grading to GPS means the pad matches the plan rather than the operator’s eye, and the tolerance holds across the whole site instead of drifting from one end to the other.

Slope work & benching

Laying back and benching long slopes on hillside sites. Grade this steep is as much about water and staging as it is about dirt — benches control drainage and give equipment a working surface all the way down the face.

Slope stability determines what can be built above and below it, so this work gets done to the geotechnical detail rather than to whatever is quickest. Durfee Creek Estates and Lone Cedar were both worked this way.

Utility discovery & complex ground

Old slide areas, historic fill, and utilities sitting nowhere near where the records put them. Ground with a history has to be found and proved before anyone can safely cut, and that discovery work is part of the job rather than a change order waiting to happen.

At White Rock, below the North Ogden Divide, a 1990s landslide had carried existing utility lines as deep as sixty feet. We were the third excavation contractor brought onto that project. The first two couldn’t finish it. Months of discovery went in ahead of the first real cut, and four phases were delivered.

Rock removal

Rock is the thing most likely to turn a schedule sideways, and on the Wasatch front it turns up often. We hammer, rip and remove it — and because we crush, what comes out isn’t a disposal cost.

On sites generating real volume, that rock becomes base course on the same property. The problem pays for part of its own solution.

Winter doesn’t stop it. Compaction and finish work are constrained by ground temperature, but rock removal and material production run through the season.

Site walk & scope

We walk the ground with you, look at the plans, and say honestly whether it’s a fit. If the schedule or the scope isn’t something we can carry properly, we’d rather tell you at this stage than halfway through.

Quantities & schedule

Takeoff, material requirements, and a realistic sequence — including what can be balanced on site and what has to come in or go out.

Mobilize

Equipment and crews on site, with material supply from our own pit coordinated against the earthwork rather than ordered separately.

Phase turnover

Pads, grades and utilities handed over ready for the next trade, phase by phase rather than all at the end.

Common questions

Working with us

What size projects do you take?

Large commercial sites, subdivisions and estate builds. We work full project scopes rather than day rates, because sustained work is what our equipment and crews are set up for. If you’re not sure whether a project fits, ask — we’ll give you a straight answer.

Do you do residential work?

Estate builds, yes — Durfee Creek Estates is an example. Single-lot residential earthwork generally isn’t a fit, though landscape material and boulder placement for residential projects is available through Greystone.

Do you supply your own material?

Yes, and it’s the main structural advantage of working with us. Base, drain rock, fill and retaining stone come off our own reserve, so material supply is coordinated with the earthwork instead of depending on a third party’s delivery schedule.

Will you take on a project another contractor has started?

We have. White Rock is the clearest example — we were the third excavation contractor on it, and the first two couldn’t finish. What matters is a proper assessment of where the job actually stands before anyone commits, rather than inheriting assumptions from the last contractor.

Do you work through the winter?

Utah winters constrain some earthwork, particularly compaction and finish grading. Excavation, rock work and material production often continue. We’ll build a realistic seasonal sequence into the schedule rather than promising work that ground temperature won’t allow.

Are you licensed, bonded and insured?

Yes — licensed, bonded and insured. Certificates and specific limits are available on request for any project that needs them on file.
